Environment
The environmental case for Translink is strong. There will be no
tearing up of environmentally sensitive land and areas of special
interest. Translink will be using only previously developed land.
Emissions
Greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) is considered the greatest
threat to mankind, as it is one of the principle contributors to
global warming. The diesel engine is still by far the most efficient
means of ground transportation and the more efficient the prime
mover is, the less CO2 it produces per kW produced. Translink will
be using the latest diesel engine technology for our rolling stock
to comply with European emissions legislation, and this will result
in a CO2 reduction of over of over 70% or 100,000 Tonnes per annum.
Noise
The diesel locomotives will be fitted with highly absorptive silencer
systems reducing noise levels by upwards of 35 dBA.
Noise and vibration deadening measures will be employed along the
route, especially through urban areas to minimising the impact of
our operations.
